Garth Matthews
Wall of Fame 2016 Builder
(January 12, 1951 – May 7, 2016)

Garth was an excellent organizer and communicator that brought people and resources together to achieve significant results for the PEI Judo community. He worked as a tireless advocate to expand the sport of Judo in PEI. He acted as a Sensei for the Charlottetown YMCA Judo Club. He also co-founded the Bunbury Judo Club and was instrumental in the founding of the Summerside Judo Club.

Garth served multiple terms on the Judo PEI Executive as President. He acted as Judo PEI’s Volunteer Coordinator for the 1991 Canada Winter Games. As such, he recruited PEI Judoka into the key positions needed and also successfully trained the large numbers of volunteers essential for the tournament.

Garth organized Judo PEI’s first entry into the World Island Games Championships. He served as the Team Manager for the PEI contingent that travelled to the Isle of Wight in 1993.

Garth served as a National Councilor with Judo Canada. He also acted as an Judo Canada official at the 1993 World Judo Championships held in Hamilton, Ontario. Garth helped raise the profile of Judo PEI both provincially and nationally.

John “Hans” Wilbert
Wall of Fame 2015 Builder

John, was an active leader within the province of Prince Edward Island since 1974 and has served continuously on the executive for JUDOPEI in some facet and has performed the role of grading chairperson, provincial coach, coaching facilitator and when necessary referee chairperson.    John was inducted into the Canada Games Hall of Fame in 2009 as a builder and then again this past fall (2015) into the SPORTPEI Hall of Fame.

Judo on Prince Edward Island quite simply would not have been as successful without his assistance or guidance, not only members of his own club (RIKIDOKAN) but other members across PEI owe much of their past, present and future success to Johns dedication and instilling the love of the sport.
